Potato sandwiches????

All right, I admit they're not much to look at. But with loads of
salt, vinegar and tomato ketchup, plus glass of wine (white, sorry
pilgrim) and Nico's Janitor of Lunacy playing ... they're divine.

I don't think Self Portrait is one of Dylan's most despised records
anymore. It's regarded more as a great flawed album as far as I can
see, rather than a crappy album. People often say they avoided it
because of it's reputation, and are pleasantly surprised when they
finally hear it. A couple of people I know even rank it as his best
(although, to be fair, these aren't Dylan fans)

And re: the idea that he "deliberately" made it bad ... I bought Neil
Young's Decade last week (£6 from Tesco!) and noticed in the liner
notes that the arrangement on Man Needs a Maid was "one of Dylan's
favourites" ... So he really likes that orchestral stuff.

"Twerp" is such a comical word to me. Funnily enough, last night I was
reading Kurt Vonnegut's "A Man Without A Country." According to
Vonnegut's definition, I am a twerp:

"And I consider anybody a twerp who hasn't read the greatest American
short story, which is "Occurrence at Owl Bridge", by Ambrose Bierce.
It is a flawless example of American genius, like "Sophisticated Lady"
by Duke Ellington or the Franklin stove..."

I need to find a copy of this short story asap.

When I saw Dylan and the Band in '66 in Vancouver, I remember the
audience laughing at the line from Fourth Time Around about spitting out
your gum. At least the audience in the front laughed. I was at the back
and didn't get it.

For great live one-off performances, my very short list of all time
favorites is Abandoned Love, Caribbean Wind, and A Satisfied Mind (I
think only done 9 Nov 1999?).

Odetta looks frail and old these days, but this new album, Odetta Lookin
for A Home proves she is still in fine voice. The album consists of
Odetta doing Leadbelly songs, and the arrangements are jazzy and very
good. Who'd have guessed that Odetta could still be making fine albums?

Amazon is selling the cd for $10 or the sonically impaired mp3 donwloads
for three Pepsi points.

Here's a review someone wrote on Amazong

Odetta has created a fantastic album of songs by the famous Leadbelly.
Pete Seeger is quoted on the back stating that he first heard Odetta
sing a song by C.W. Leadbetter and he has waited 50 years for her to do
an album of his songs. He is thrilled with this album and so am I.
Odetta has improved with age. Her voice is brilliant in delivering her
unique renditions of these songs. She has lost none of her vocal
strength; on the contrary, I prefer her recent works over her Vanguard
albums. She has a back-up band and like her previous release on MC
Records, "Blues Everywhere I Go", there is a feeling of intimacy as if
one is there in person hearing this great artist. I recommend this album
without a bit of hesitation. I have asked independently run CD shops to
carry this album and "Blues Everywhere I Go". Odetta is truly an
American Treasure and I hope there will be more albums of this caliber
from her. She is better than she has ever been and that is quite a feat
for an artist who is, and always has been, brilliant. This is an album
to really sit and listen to and it leaves the listener wanting more.
"Looking For A Home" is a true work of art due to the genius of Odetta.
This is a must have for anyone who loves folk/blues music. Thank You,
Thank You, Odetta!!!

There's no mystery to why Dylan was inspired by Odetta. You've
convinced me that "Lookin' For A Home" is worth investigating. I
recently found a download for an interview of Odetta around the
release time for "Blues Everywhere I Go". I'll post it here:

Evan Marshall authored an article - DYLAN RARITIES Part One: The 60s
- for the Feb 08 issue of RECORD COLLECTOR (UK).

On page 26, Marshall writes about the '63 Dylan/Baez duet "Troubled
And I Don't Know Why", "Fairly disposable stuff, but highly likeable,
and they would still be performing duets on this number a decade
later, during the Rolling Thunder Revue tour."

WHAT???????????

As far as I know, Dylan/Baez coupled on this song several times during
the '60s. The only versions I've ever heard was the '63 Forest Hills
duet and a Baez solo from a PBS concert from Scotland several decades
ago.

I don't remember Dylan-Baez doing this song during RTR.

Anybody?

Paul Pearson

1st, the duet version you've heard is probably the one available on
Joan's "Rare, Live & Classic", Disc One from 17feb63. Of which she
writes in the booklet:

}
The first time we sang this song was at Gerde's Folk City. I don't
remember if it was Bob's set or mine, but we ended up on stage
together and he said, "Let's sing 'Troubled and I Don't Know Why'." I
never heard it before! But it was one of those ditties that you just
do. He would sing the verses and then I would come in on the chorus.
By the time this version was recorded, I was well acquainted with it.
{

She does not mention RTR, nor the derivation of the song, nor my
alternate additional lyrics.

That said, anyone who can identify correctly the source material for
"TaIDKY" is awarded 1500 bonus points (US, Canadian or Euro).

That furthur said, as to firing yr typist, it's really yr grammarian
needs the boot. In any event, be careful: Is (s)he Documented? Have
you been withholding the appropriate taxes? ElseWise, there's a
lawsuit waiting to happen...

Take a tip from one who's tried.

Ever,
dudley

Yes, sloppy journalism - cos also, the way it's written it sounds like
they'd been doing it off and on throughout the intervening years as
well!

Loathe as i am to selfReplying, i've actually looked at those lyrics
now & that's not always how i hear 'em. Here's mine, discrepancies
bracketed:

}
It don't take much to be a criminal
One wrong move and they'll turn you into one
At first the pain [some hear "decay"] is just subliminal
You [To] protect yourself and you're forever on the run

I see my light come shinin'
I don't need no doctor or no priest
Any day now
I shall be released

He will find you where your stayin'
Even in the arms of somebody elses wife
Your laughin' now, you should be prayin'
It being [To be in] the midnight hour of your life

I see my light come shinin'
I don't need no doctor or no priest
Any day now
I shall be released

Yes. You jumped into the car and yelled from the window, as you sped
away, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall." When you got home, you
threw up in the garden.
